Lessons learned in establishing the DEVCOM CBC Biochemical Pilot-scale Biomanufacturing Research & Development Facility

Scaling up biomaterials and biochemical production is crucial for advancing non-pharma, non-food R&D, but finding facilities to handle non-traditional biomaterials is challenging. The DEVCOM CBC team shares key lessons from designing, building, and commissioning a pilot-scale facility for liquid biochemical production—the first of its kind within the DOD. Over four years, they refined best practices in facility setup, equipment operation, safety, process parameters, technology transfer, waste disposal, and cost management. Their experience bridges the gap between lab-scale innovation and real-world application, paving the way for future advancements in biomanufacturing
